Teenagers in Kurgan were forced to watch the sentencing of their peer, who was caught selling illegal substances. Fifty schoolchildren from the city of Kurgan were brought to the trial, where “the children saw with their own eyes” the announcement of the verdict and the sending of a comrade to a colony, which should become a lesson for them, as stated in the explanation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. However, adolescent psychologists have a different opinion.
The teenagers were invited to the Kurgan City Court as part of the “fight against drug addiction” – they attended the trial of their peer pawnbroker, who received 5 years in prison for three counts of drug distribution. The visit to the court was supposed to have educational motives – after the verdict was announced, the drug control employee had a conversation with the children about the fact that “there are no harmless drugs,” as well as about the nature of addiction. They also talked about responsibility for the use, storage and distribution of drugs.
Olga Grudneva, a psychologist at one of the Moscow schools, whom the MK correspondent contacted for comments, is convinced that such demonstrative spanking has no effect.
“Modern schoolchildren are very sensitive to ethical issues, so such a maneuver will definitely put them off. Not because they consider the behavior of the pawnbroker to be correct, but because they consider such behavior of their elders unacceptable.
Gone are the days of flogging in front of the line. In addition, most modern teenagers are already sensitive to the law. Please note: their parents cross the road at a red light, but the boys almost never. So they do not need such confirmation of the rule of law. This is a very strange maneuver,” says the psychologist.
Grudneva also added that there would be a greater impact if children saw, for example, their peer being taken away by ambulance after an overdose – such shocking content is more impressive than a trial.
