In Yekaterinburg, about 25 people came out to protest against the construction of a correctional center for prisoners in the Uktus microdistrict. The townspeople are not happy that the convicts will live next to the school. According to Kommersant’s information, police officers on duty at the scene detained an elderly woman, and other protesters tried to defend her.

A correctional center is a special institution created for the execution of court sentences to punishment in the form of restriction of freedom. Persons in a correctional center have certain rights that those in other penal institutions do not have; in particular, they can, with the permission of the administration, temporarily leave the center.

“The pedestrian route of school No. 131 students runs directly along the building on Prostornaya Street, 1. Despite the fact that in such centers those convicted of crimes of minor and medium gravity usually serve their sentences, previously such persons could have been convicted of serious and especially grave crimes against the person and sexual integrity, which causes great concern for parents of schoolchildren,”— indicated in an appeal from citizens published in the “Sosnovy Bor Activists” group on Telegram.

The project of the center for 196 prisoners, according to local media, has already been approved by local authorities, who allocated GUFSIN building. However, the premises are not yet listed on the department’s balance sheet, since renovations have not been completed.

Residents of Uktus appealed to the prosecutor of the Sverdlovsk region Boris Krylov, governor Evgeny Kuyvashev and mayor Alexei Orlov with a request to prevent the construction of a correctional center.
