Yesterday, January 9, a flare of the highest class, X, was recorded on the Sun, the Institute of Applied Geophysics (IPG) of Roshydromet reported. This is the third powerful outbreak since the beginning of the year – two outbreaks of the same class occurred on January 6.
“January 9 at 21:50 Moscow time in the group of spots 3184 (on the Sun.— “b”) an X1.9 flare was registered in the X-ray range with a duration of 20 minutes, ”says the website IPG. On the same day, several lower-class M flares also occurred on the Sun.
For the whole of 2022, only seven outbreaks of the highest class were recorded, clarified laboratory of solar astronomy of IKI and ISTP. “Although the event (January 9.— “b”) is still not a record, it is the second strongest solar flare in about five years, since September 2017,” the laboratory added.
Solar flares can cause magnetic storms. They can cause malfunctions in energy and navigation systems, as well as cause power failures in industrial networks.
