A picket of opponents of the abortion ban was held in Chelyabinsk

An agreed-upon picket was held in the Kolyushchenko square in Chelyabinsk in defense of women’s reproductive rights. The event was attended by police officers. Violations of the rules of picketing and detentions were not recorded, a Kommersant correspondent who was present at the scene said.
The event started at 10:30 and lasted two hours. Four participants of the picket demonstrated posters with slogans against the ban on abortions, and one more stood with a flag. An hour later, the picketers were joined by representatives of the Yabloko party, including the head of the Chelyabinsk regional branch, Yaroslav Shcherbakov. About 10 active participants spoke at the picket, they were watched by about 15 passers-by and journalists.
According to the organizer of the picket, Galina Pasechnikova, the purpose of the action is to draw public attention to the dangerous consequences of a possible ban on abortion.
“The picket is an initiative of individuals with an active civil position as a response to the many initiatives of various political figures and organizations to ban any abortion in our country. A large number of people consider the ban on abortion to be absurd and a departure of our society into the past,” said Galina Pasechnikova.
The picket was initiated by a Chelyabinsk feminist organization. At the end of January, the members of the association sent a notification to the city administration about holding a rally at the monument to Lenin on Aloe Pole. The mayor’s office did not agree on this site and allowed them to gather in the Kolyushchenko square.
