Harvard has identified a previously unknown sign of impending dementia
Scientists from Harvard Medical School have found a new sign of impending dementia – these are problems with orienting to audio directions. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
The study used the Harvard Automated Telephone Test (APT). It includes three telephone tasks to be completed using the interactive voice assistant – refilling a prescription for a drug, calling a health insurance company, and processing a bank transfer. Participants also completed standard cognitive tests and brain scans to detect Alzheimer’s disease.
According to the results of the study, in about a third of the participants who were clinically healthy, the scans found abnormalities characteristic of early Alzheimer’s disease. And all of these participants had problems navigating in tasks with calls.
Scientists hope that their study will help to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease earlier and improve therapy.
