The NATO Military Committee headed by Admiral Rob Bauer arrived in Georgia, reported to the Ministry of Defense of the Republic.

“Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze received Admiral Rob Bauer as part of the fifth visit of the NATO Military Committee to Georgia,” the statement said.

The parties also discussed Georgia’s reforms in the defense sector, noted “the importance of the participation of Georgian defense forces in joint exercises and the conduct of international exercises in Georgia, as well as Georgia’s important contribution to ensuring international security,” writes TASS.

In the summer of 2022, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili statedthat the unresolved conflicts with Abkhazia and South Ossetia are an obstacle to Georgia’s entry into the alliance. At the same time, he noted, Georgia is doing everything possible to ensure that the country’s army meets the standards of the North Atlantic Alliance.

In addition to NATO, Georgia is seeking to join the European Union. At the beginning of September, the head of the European Union’s foreign policy service, Josep Borrell, visited Tbilisi. Then he statedthat the door to the EU is open for Georgia, but the country still needs to do “some work” to join the union.

Borrell clarified that candidate status “is not something that is awarded to some countries, it must be earned through serious reforms and compliance with EU values.”
