THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – WHY NOT
It’s summer: Idris Elba fights against a synthetic lion. This sentence could have been the amusing selling point of Beast, by Baltasar Kormakur, a filmmaker subscribed to testosterone B series where men reclaim their virility after a long struggle against the elements (Everest, To survive, Adrift). The director this time sets his scene in the wild landscapes of South Africa: it is there that Doctor Nate Samuels (Idris Elba, also starring in Three thousand years waiting for youby George Miller, where he plays a jinn), in the company of his two teenagers, travels in the footsteps of his wife who recently died of cancer.
The man carries with him a heavy guilt, since he left his wife at the very moment when she fell ill – at least that is what his daughters reproach him for, before running to cry in their room. For those who did not immediately understand, Elba will say of his late wife: “I would like to fight this woman one last time. » The next morning, the trio set off again, heading for a nature reserve where wild animals frolic freely, and more particularly lions who make friends with humans – evidenced by this touching hug between Martin, the guide of the Samuels family, and a big tomcat with a bad shape, just released from the filming of the last Lion King (Jon Favreau, 2019) live-action. But, in the neighboring village, the population has been exterminated – a lion is suspected. If the African villagers did not survive, the Americans will no doubt do better.
Lack of humor
Beast has all the ingredients of a nanar: this beautiful spirit of seriousness, this total absence of humor, its actors who give everything, its belief in the values of action films (virility, family, redemption). His art is naive, almost moving in its way of reusing old tricks. Lost in the middle of nature, the little family hides in their broken down 4 x 4, which is attacked by an enraged lion, who has gone mad (we are told) after the poachers decimated his group. We think of Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993) – the logo of the franchise is also on the T-shirt of one of the teenagers.
To sum up: the doctor is haunted by the memory of his wife, nature takes revenge on humans, Kormakur loves Jurassic Parkthem jump scares are very scary, the roars too.
