Scientists from the leading scientific organization of the Ministry of Emergency Situations – VNII GOChS – have developed a modular mobile shelter to protect against light radiation from a nuclear explosion and radioactive contamination of the area. The shelter was called “KUB-M”.
“KUB-M provides protection for 48 hours from an air shock wave and light radiation from a nuclear explosion; penetrating radiation and radioactive contamination of the area; high-explosive and fragmentation effects of conventional weapons; falling debris from building structures; hazardous chemicals; fires,” reports RIA Novosti with reference to the press service.
The basic KUB-M configuration accommodates 54 people and a technical unit. The capacity of the shelter can be increased with additional modules. If necessary, the nuclear shelter can be transported by road or rail to a new location. The production, transportation and installation of KUB-M is half the cost of constructing a permanent shelter. In addition, its production and installation takes only three months.
December 17 Russia completed construction of the last station under the International Nuclear Test Monitoring System provided for by the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk station became the last of 32 Russian facilities under the CTBT, the ratification of which was withdrawn by Moscow this fall.
