Europol has eliminated a large group of hackers and extortionists in Ukraine, which affected organizations from 71 countries. The department’s website states that the swindlers caused multimillion-dollar damage through their actions.
“…The investigation established that the attackers encrypted more than 250 servers belonging to large corporations, resulting in losses exceeding several hundred million euros,” the statement said.
The operation to detain the 32-year-old leader of the group and four of his closest accomplices began on November 21. The National Police of Ukraine was assisted by about 20 investigators from France, Germany, Norway and the USA. Security forces have been preparing for searches and arrests at 30 sites in Cherkasy, Rivne, Kyiv and Vinnytsia regions for more than 2 years.
To carry out the attacks, the hackers used, in particular, LockerGoga, MegaCortex, Dharma and HIVE ransomware. Having already penetrated the infrastructure of the victim company, they gained a foothold in the network using the TrickBot, PowerShell Empire, and Cobalt Strike malware.
