A gala evening was held in the Moscow region in honor of the centenary of Russian volleyball

On the eve of the final matches of the Russian Cup, a gala evening dedicated to the centenary of domestic volleyball was held at the LIVE-Arena in the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region. One of its most notable events was the arrival of the President of the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) Aleksandar Borichic, as well as representatives of a number of national federations, to the holiday, despite the “isolation” sanctions in force against the sport.
Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the All-Russian Volleyball Federation (VFV) Nikolai Patrushev called the anniversary of “national significance”: “On April 12, the President of Russia signed a decree celebrating the centenary of Russian volleyball. And this gave impetus to the development of volleyball. And our merits are very serious. 71 medals were won at world and European competitions. No other sport in our country has such an achievement. We will win even more medals when the International Olympic Committee stops being weak, when it stops giving in to pressure. We are improving our material base, and this further attracts those who want to play volleyball to us.” According to Mr. Patrushev, 2.4 million people are currently playing volleyball in Russia.
At the gala evening, the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin, the General Director of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Vladimir Sengleyev and the VFW President Stanislav Shevchenko presented awards to a number of Russian volleyball legends – such as Vitaly Kovalenko, Irina Makagonova, Irina Ilchenko, Nadezhda Radzevich, Sergey Tetyukhin, Vladimir Dorokhov, Yuri Panchenko, Alexander Ermilov, Roza Salikhova, Alexander Savin, Ekaterina Gamova.
Mr. Matytsin thanked the VFV “for teamwork” and “the systematic development of volleyball,” adding that “it will be difficult to repeat the victorious history of our volleyball,” and “if anyone can repeat it, it will be the Russian national team.”
