A family of wild boars in the TiNAO fell into a camera trap (video)

A whole herd of curious wild boars fell into the lens of a camera trap installed in a natural area in the TiNAO. The video was filmed in early December. Ecologists from the capital decided to tell Muscovites about the wintering of these animals and about the rules of conduct when meeting with them.

In Moscow, wild boars can feel safe, as we do not have large predators: bears and wolves. In addition, it is forbidden to hunt these animals throughout the capital, including the TiNAO.

Boars move in large groups. Usually the herd consists of several females and their cubs – 10 piglets each. Families try to behave as silently as possible in order to remain invisible in the forest.

Boars are not too picky about food, they eat everything they can find: nuts, acorns, roots. These animals do not store food for the winter, but at the end of summer they begin to intensively accumulate a layer of fat. Closer to the cold, thick hair with a warm undercoat grows on their body. Snowy winter becomes a real test for wild boars. Their hooves are not adapted to move through deep snowdrifts. Animals have to walk more often along previously trodden paths. In winter, groups of wild boars move in single file along the paths to feeding places and back. Forays occur, as a rule, at dusk, and during the day the animals prefer to rest, lying directly on the snow. Their habitats are usually swampy areas of the forest or the vicinity of water bodies.

The winter diet of wild boars consists of plant roots found under the snow, branches of trees and shrubs, dry grass, and less often animal food. In the natural parks of the capital, special feeders are installed for wild boars so that the animals can more easily survive the difficult winter period. As an addition to the natural food base for large ungulates, salt licks are installed – containers that contain salt. This treat serves as a source of useful minerals.

Having met by chance with a wild boar, it is important to remain calm. Do not provoke the animal, panic or try to run away from it. Wild boars sometimes enter the residential areas of the city at night, but do not stay there for a long time. Moreover, these animals are able to coexist quite peacefully with people. For the entire period of observation of wild boars within the city, not a single case of attacks on residents was recorded.

A couple of years ago, on the Shchukin Peninsula, vacationers caught the eye of a local boar. She remained in the natural area for about three months, and then safely left.
