The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don upheld the conviction of contract soldier Danil Churyumov, who was found guilty of desertion by the Sevastopol garrison court. It is reported that Churyumov, being a contract soldier, left his temporary location in the Kherson region without the permission of his commanders in January of this year, taking a Kalashnikov assault rifle with him, and went home to the Crimea. The contractor tried to pass through the checkpoint in civilian clothes, but was detained and handed over to military investigators. Churyumov was charged with desertion during the period of mobilization or in the context of an armed conflict. The court sentenced him to 5.5 years in a strict regime colony.
Churyumov pleaded not guilty and appealed against the verdict, but during the proceedings in the appellate court he repented, apologized to the personnel and officials of his military unit, and also provided charitable assistance. He also stated that he was ready to continue his service after he was granted leave.
The defense of the defendant drew attention to his health – he was shell-shocked in the combat zone – as well as to the condition of his mother, who is in a specialized medical institution without the care of close relatives. Lawyers believe that these circumstances led to the fact that the contractor decided to leave the location.
However, the Southern Military Court did not accept the arguments of the defense and upheld the verdict. The Judicial Board drew attention to the fact that Churyumov expressed a desire to continue serving only after his arrest and placement in a guardhouse. As regards his mother’s health, the court noted that she was under the supervision of employees of a medical institution.
