The Spanish prosecutor’s office filed a complaint to the country’s High Court against the president of the country’s football federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales. He is suspected of sexual assault and coercion for kissing Spain soccer player Jennifer Hermoso in the final of the women’s soccer championship. This was reported by Reuters.
The complaint was filed by prosecutor Martha Durantes Gil. According to her, Jennifer Hermoso and her family insist that they suffered from pressure from Luis Rubiales and his “professional entourage.” She added that Mr. Rubiales could face one to four years in prison.
Prosecutors filed the complaint three days after Jennifer Hermoso complained to the department. As Reuters notes, this is one of the formal steps so that the court can bring formal charges.
On August 20, the Spanish national team won the match with the English team with a score of 1: 0 in the final of the women’s football championship. During the award ceremony, Luis Rubiales kissed the team captain, 33-year-old soccer player Jennifer Hermoso, on the lips. After this, the football player said that she did not like the actions of Luis Rubiales.
On August 25, the public prosecutor’s office in Madrid opened an investigation against him on suspicion of sexual assault. On August 26, the leadership of the International Football Federation (FIFA) suspended Mr. Rubiales from work for 90 days.
