A child had his gills removed in the Moscow region
Doctors in the Moscow region performed an operation to remove the gills of a four-year-old boy suffering from a rare congenital pathology. Writes about this SHOT.
The pathology of the child admitted to the Vidnovskaya City Hospital shocked even experienced doctors. The boy had elements of gills on the side of his neck, in particular, a gill arch consisting of bone tissue.
In the human embryo, at a certain stage, gill slits are formed, which usually close during development. Very rarely, these openings remain unclosed, which leads to the formation of rudimentary gills in the newborn. This is what happened with this boy.
According to the head of the pediatric surgery department, Victoria Zhironkina, unclosed gill slits form a canal. If this channel is closed on both sides, this leads to the formation of a cyst, in the walls of which gill elements may remain. However, the presence of rudiments of a gill arch made of bone is a very rare occurrence. The only way to get rid of this congenital pathology is to remove it.
The operation took several hours and was successful. The boy’s condition has improved and he has already been discharged from the hospital.
