August 31 is expected “blue moon” – the second full moon of the month, which will coincide with the supermoon. This information was reported by the press service of the Moscow Planetarium TASS.
The term “blue moon” is not related to color, but is associated with a rare phenomenon – the second full moon, which occurs on average once every three years. The name comes from the English expression “once in a blue moon” (“once during the “blue” moon”). This time, the “blue moon” coincides with the maximum approach of the moon to the Earth – perigee, which makes it visually larger. The diameter of the Moon this time will increase by about 13.5% compared to the maximum distance from the Earth – the apogee.
The maximum approach of the Moon to the Earth (perigee) will occur on August 30 at 18:52 Moscow time, and the full moon will take place at 04:37 in the morning on August 31. The difference between these events will be 9 hours 45 minutes. The full moon period from August 29 to 31 can be called a supermoon.
According to the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, in Moscow and St. Petersburg on August 30 and 31, partly cloudy weather is expected at night, which may interfere with observations. In St. Petersburg, it is also possible intermittent rain on Wednesday night.
The next time the inhabitants of the Earth will be able to see two full moons in one month will be in May 2026.
