The management of the Inter, Milan and Juventus clubs approached the Italian Football Federation with a proposal to reduce the number of participants in the national championship from 20 to 18 teams, the agency reported ANSA. The championship was expanded from 18 to 20 clubs in 2004.
The issue of reducing participants will be discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the Italian Football Federation on March 11. The event will focus on changes in the structure of Italian football.
The applied clubs are the most titled in the country. Juventus became champions 36 times, Inter and Milan 19 times each. This season, Inter ranks first (57 points), Juventus ranks second (53), and Milan ranks third (49).
