The Ministry of Health considered that there is no need for scent kits to test the sense of smell
The Russian Ministry of Health plans to change the standard by which neurologists’ offices and clinical diagnostic rooms should be equipped today. IN documentpublished on the portal of draft regulatory legal acts, it is indicated that it is planned to exclude from the mandatory list sets of aromatic odorous substances that are used to test patients’ sense of smell.
The standard set of equipment for a neurologist’s office is quite clear – a medical cabinet and a couch, a thermometer, a tonometer, a neurological hammer familiar to everyone from childhood, a tuning fork, a computer with a cognitive rehabilitation program, a negatoscope (a device for viewing X-rays), as well as two sets of aromatic substances for research functions of smell. It was this item that was decided to be excluded from the mandatory list.
As Alexander Evdokimov, a neurologist with 21 years of experience, explained to MK, problems with the sense of smell are a rather rare disease, and it is not at all necessary to keep sets of aromas in every office. Even during the pandemic, when many people who had been ill experienced problems, not all of them made it to neurologists, limiting themselves to appointments with therapists.
Moreover, this method of testing the sense of smell is quite old and not very effective; for a full diagnosis, radiography, CT scan of the skull, nose, electroencephalography and other methods are now used.
