Source TASS in the administration of St. Petersburg said that the monument to the Polish victims of political repression at the Levashovsky cemetery was sent for restoration “after the attack of vandals.” About the loss of the monument became known 22 July.
The head of the Returned Names Center, historian Anatoly Razumov, told Kommersant that he sent a letter to the head of the city, Alexander Beglov, and the chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, Alexander Belsky, asking him to explain who made the decision to dismantle the monument and where it is now, but received no answer.
The Polish Catholic monument was opened in 1993 by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland and the Polonia Society. On the cross in Polish and Russian is written: “Forgive and forgive us.” On the stele: “In memory of the Poles, victims of mass repressions, who were shot in 1937-1938. Compatriots”.
Every year on October 30, on the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repressions, the city administration organizes bus trips to Levashovo and holds wreath-laying ceremonies.
