The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) has announced that it will not introduce the Chinese language into the compulsory curriculum. The institute noted that they still consider the initiative “timely and promising”, but the discussion of its implementation “has reached a dead end.”
“In order not to get bogged down in discussions, and most importantly, not to drag out the transition period and give students the opportunity to study foreign languages at the traditionally high level for Phystech, we decided to return to the classic MIPT program of teaching foreign languages, which was implemented at the institute until September 1 2021,” reads message MIPT.
On March 28, it became known that from September 2023, MIPT students will study English and Chinese on a mandatory basis. The university explained the measure, among other things, by the fact that 27% of the scientific literature on the subject of the Physicotechnical Institute is published in Chinese. The Ministry of Education and Science considered this decision “a bold step towards strengthening cooperation between Russia and China.”
The youth committee of the institute in response announced a collection of signatures for a petition to the leadership. The petition stated that students were against being deprived of the right to choose between studying other languages besides Chinese: Spanish and French authorities proposed to be excluded from the program.
