The governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, at an operational meeting in the government of the region, announced that he would head a voluntary people’s squad. The head of the region recalled that the squad was created to patrol the border areas, and in the event of an enemy invasion, it will become the backbone of the territorial defense.

“In peacetime, the governor, your obedient servant, is responsible for organizing the defense. Therefore, I decided to lead the voluntary people’s squad of the Kursk region,” explained Mr. Starovoit. He noted that the commanders of the operational areas, which correspond to the administrative borders of the border regions, will be included in the command bodies of the squad. Local officials were instructed to select commanders: they can be the heads of districts, their deputies or experienced combatants.

Roman Starovoit noted that recruitment to the people’s squad is going on actively: the combatants are trained weekly in shooting and medical care. “We expect that it will not be useful. But, given the current situation, we must be absolutely ready for any development of events,” concluded Roman Starovoit.

On the creation of people’s squads in the Kursk region was announced in March last year. In December, the governor announced that more than 2,000 people had joined the people’s squads since the beginning of the special military operation. Total power suggest about 6 thousand volunteers joined them. On the January holidays Roman Starovoit passed training in the training camp of PMC “Wagner”.
