In the three months since the adoption of the new citizenship law, 62 people have lost their acquired Russian citizenship due to crimes, reported Ministry of Internal Affairs. Appropriate decisions have been made against persons guilty of rape, drug trafficking and violence against government officials. After serving their sentence, persons are subject to deportation.
“From October 26, 2023 to January 10, 2024, 62 decisions were made to terminate citizenship of the Russian Federation in connection with the commission of crimes such as the use of violence against a government official, rape, and drug trafficking,” the message states.
The largest number of such decisions were made in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Leningrad, Chelyabinsk, Vladimir, Orenburg, Tver and Nizhny Novgorod regions, as well as in the Krasnodar Territory. According to the department, after serving their sentences, the individuals will be “removed from the territory of Russia.” It is noted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to verify and identify all persons who committed a crime after receiving citizenship.
On October 26, 2023, a new citizenship law was adopted in Russia. The law allows for the revocation of acquired citizenship if a person has committed certain crimes or threatened the national security of the country. It is noted that for decision-making it does not matter when the illegal actions were committed.
