163 migrants who arrived in Finland across the border with the Russian Federation requested asylum on November 17, border guards in the southeast of the country reported on the social network X. A total of 335 applications have been submitted since the beginning of the year, about 300 of them since the beginning of November. Since November 18, the work of the southern checkpoints has been suspended by decision of Helsinki due to the influx of migrants.
As Yle notes, on the eve of November 17, more people arrived than in previous days. So, on November 16, more than 20 refugees crossed the border, on November 15 – more than 70, on November 14 – at least 50. Mostly, according to Finnish media, citizens of Iraq, Yemen, Somalia and Syria arrive.
Since November 18, the Finnish government has closed the largest checkpoints in terms of passenger traffic and those closest to St. Petersburg on the border with Russia. The decision was made due to the influx of migrants, it will be valid until February 18. During this period, passenger and cargo traffic will be concentrated at four northern checkpoints.
