10-year-old Russian woman paralyzed after runny nose

A 10-year-old girl’s runny nose led to the resulting abscess penetrating her brain, causing paralysis of her arms and legs. This was reported by the press service of the Surgut Clinical Trauma Hospital.

The department explained that a 10-year-old girl is being treated in the hospital. She was admitted to the department with a purulent formation in the cranial cavity, which appeared after the schoolgirl fell ill with a common runny nose. “Because of this, the child’s function of movement in his right arm and leg was impaired,” doctors at the hospital said. “Open surgery was required to remove the accumulation of pathological contents.” Treatment for a runny nose that arose against the background of an acute respiratory illness (ARI) did not help the schoolgirl. The inflammation progressed. Doctors decided to place the girl in a hospital. There they cleared her sinuses, but the pus managed to penetrate into the brain and eye socket: paralysis of two limbs occurred, and the eye closed.

The child was helped by an operation performed by neurosurgeons Olesya Yakushina and Andrey Erban. They managed to remove the lesion from the girl’s skull. Then the ophthalmologist began to treat the young patient. Now the girl is recovering: she can move her arms and legs again.
