Zurabishvili: The European Union is obliged to accept Georgia into its membership in order to stop Russia

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, demanded that the European Union accept the country into its membership, explaining this decision by “the need to stop Russia.”

According to the politician, Moscow is striving to occupy a leading position in the Black Sea basin.

“Georgia’s membership in the EU is the only acceptable prospect for a country that has shared European principles throughout history. Today it also means security… In 2007, Russia announced that it would not allow Europe to end up in the Black Sea… Russia is implementing its plans,” the politician said.

Zurabishvili added that the current situation is “a huge challenge for both Europe and Georgia.

“Our common task is to stop Russia in its desire to take the main position in the Black Sea basin. This… is necessary to ensure the security of trade routes,” the Georgian president said.
