Zelensky urged to transfer control over the Zaporozhye NPP to the IAEA mission

The Russian military must leave the territory of the Zaporozhye NPP, control over the plant must be transferred to the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during his speech via video link at a meeting of the UN Security Council, transmit “RIA News”.

“The IAEA mission must take permanent control over the situation at the nuclear power plant as soon as possible, and Russia must stop nuclear blackmail without any conditions and leave the plant completely,” Zelensky said.

Earlier today, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev Meets in Istanbul with IAEA Director Rafael Grossi, discussing “the whole range of issues” about the forthcoming IAEA mission to the Zaporozhye NPP. The Russian side reaffirmed the need for the speedy conduct of such a mission, as well as its readiness to provide all necessary support.

On August 16, it became known about the start of preparations for the second IAEA mission to ZNPP. Mikhail Ulyanov, permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, said that the preparations are still going slowly because of Grossi’s vacation. August 23 Director of the IAEA declaredthat the mission could take place within a few days in case of successful negotiations.

August 23 at the request of the Russian side took place urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation at the ZNPP. Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that Russia had distributed photographic evidence of shelling of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant by Ukraine in the UN Council and the General Assembly. Nebenzya also noted that since the last meeting of the Security Council on the Zaporizhzhya NPP, the situation with nuclear safety at the plant has deteriorated greatly.
