The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) refused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to perform in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, writes The Times.
The EBU, an alliance of over 100 broadcasters that oversees the competition with the BBC as host this year, is concerned that the appearance of a president could politicize the event.
It is specified that earlier Zelensky asked the EBU to give him permission to address an audience of 160 million people in the final of the competition in order to convince her to continue supporting Ukraine.
After this decision, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova wrote in his Telegram channel that it was “in vain”. “This year he would compete with the Eurovision participants,” she added.
This is not the first time Zelenskiy has tried to speak at such events. In particular, he wanted to speak via video link at the Oscars in March this year, but was refused. At the same time, at the beginning of the year, she was able to address the audience at the Golden Globe Awards.
The Eurovision final will take place on May 13. This year the competition is held in the UK, although last year the winner was a participant from Ukraine. the decision to move the competition to another country is due to the need to ensure security. On February 26, 2022, VGTRK, Channel One and Radio House Ostankino announced that they had suspended their membership in the European Broadcasting Union after Russia was banned from Eurovision in 2022.
