Zelensky proposes extending martial law in Ukraine for another 90 days

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada proposing to extend martial law and mobilization in the country for another 90 days, transmits publication “Strana.ua”.

It is specified that the martial law will be extended on February 19, from the date of the official publication of the document.

Ukrainian authorities introduced martial law in the country February 24, 2022 – the day the Russian special operation began. On February 25, Zelensky signed a decree on a general mobilization. On the same day, the head of state announced that in Ukraine they would issue weapons to everyone. On March 10, he also signed a law allowing Ukrainian, foreign and stateless civilians to use firearms.

Since then, the decree on martial law has been extended several times. In particular, since May 22, it has been extended several times for three months. The last time – in November 2022, its action should end on February 19.

Russia’s special operation in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin called the protection of the inhabitants of Donbass, as well as the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, its goals. During the special operation, Russian troops took full control of the LPR, as well as most of the DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. Subsequently, these territories became part of Russia, and on October 19 martial law was introduced in the regions.

In Russia, on September 21, 2022, partial mobilization was announced. The call affected those in the reserve and those who served and have certain military specialties and relevant experience. In total, it was planned to mobilize 300,000 people. On October 31, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the mobilization in Russia had been completed, according to him, a total of 318,000 people had been called up, as there were a large number of volunteers. After that, the Russian authorities repeatedly stated that the mobilization in Russia was completed. Back in the fall of 2022, Putin stressed that this issue was “finished”, but the decree on the completion of mobilization measures was not signed.
