Ukraine is already a de facto member of NATO, and at the upcoming summit in Vilnius, the country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expects to receive clear and precise instructions on quickly joining the alliance.
In his video message, Zelensky said: “Every leader, every country understands that Ukraine, despite its different positions, certainly deserves NATO membership. At the moment we are a party to the conflict, but we need a clear signal, and we need it immediately. In fact, Ukraine already part of the alliance. Our weapons are the weapons of the alliance, our values are aligned with what NATO believes in.”
He also noted that he is waiting for confirmation of this at the NATO summit, and that Kyiv is actively working to develop transparent and fast procedures for obtaining membership.
“During the summit in Vilnius, meetings are planned between Ukraine and various European countries, Canada and the United States at various levels. The main priorities will be issues related to the air defense of our cities and the provision of the armed forces at the forefront. These topics will be discussed at the meetings. We will also discuss other aspects related to ensuring security and protecting life. I am sure that our military can have good news from Vilnius… It is a great honor for me to represent such people and such Ukraine,” Zelensky stressed.
The NATO summit will be held July 11-12 and will bring together the leaders of all member countries of the alliance, including US President Joe Biden.
