Zelensky allowed the postponement of parliamentary elections due to martial law

Ukraine’s scheduled parliamentary elections may not take place this fall if martial law is still in place in the country. About it declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with The Washington Post.

“If we have martial law, we will not be able to hold elections. The constitution prohibits holding any elections during martial law…according to the constitution of Ukraine, after the end of martial law, it seems, after 90 days, elections are held,” he said.

Earlier in April, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk saidthat a change in the law would be required to hold elections under martial law. In his opinion, even in this case, Ukraine does not have the opportunity now to hold high-quality and fair elections.

Early parliamentary elections passed in Ukraine on July 21, 2019. The presidential party “Servant of the People” received more than 43% of the vote. This year, elections to the Rada are to be held on October 29.

The Ukrainian authorities introduced martial law in the country on February 24, 2022, the day the Russian special operation began. On February 25, Zelensky signed a decree on a general mobilization. The last time the period of martial law and mobilization in Ukraine was extended until August 18.
