Zakharova: the ceiling of prices for Russian oil is fraught with devastating consequences

The introduction of a price ceiling on Russian oil would have devastating consequences for everyone, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

“We have repeatedly said that such measures — the so-called ceiling on Russian oil prices — are not just a non-market mechanism, this is an anti-market measure that destroys supply chains, can significantly complicate the situation on global energy markets,” the diplomat noted (quote according to TASS).

She also reiterated President Vladimir Putin’s position that Russia will not supply oil to those countries that support the introduction of this mechanism. She called it an anti-market measure, the consequences of which would be devastating for everyone.

“Price diktat, the formation of a certain cartel of buyers creates an extremely dangerous precedent for international trade, which is still carried out on market principles,” she concluded.

Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said earlier that the Russian side would consider the introduction of an oil price ceiling an unacceptable step, regardless of its size, and would work only on market conditions.

Now the EU countries are discussing the introduction of a price ceiling for Russian oil in the range of $65-70 per barrel. As Reuters reported earlier, Poland has taken an “absolutely uncompromising” position on this issue, proposing to lower the price limit to $30 per barrel. If the restrictions cannot be agreed by next Monday, the tougher measures agreed in May, which would include a ban on sea shipments of Russian crude oil from December 5 and oil products from February 5, will come into force.

Speaking at the forumRussian Energy Week» On October 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin once again stressed that energy supplies to those countries that approve the price ceiling would be cut off. Before that, he repeatedly said that the introduction of restrictions would lead to an increase in energy prices. During the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), Putin said that the idea of imposing a price ceiling on energy resources is “nonsense and nonsense.”
