Zakharova said that the European Union betrayed Armenia

Armenia was betrayed by the European Union (EU), not Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a briefing.

Zakharova noted that the EU “silently watched” how Russian peacekeepers mediated the ceasefire, how they supplied humanitarian aid to Nagorno-Karabakh after the Lachin corridor was unblocked, and how they escorted displaced people from Karabakh to Armenia.

“Well, silently, inciting and telling the citizens of Armenia lies about the fact that they were allegedly betrayed by Russia. What was agreed upon through the mediation of Moscow, Yerevan dissuaded the European Union from carrying out – it was he who betrayed the Armenians,” she said.

According to Zakharova, the EU does not provide “any stability or de-escalation” in Armenia, but is engaged in “intelligence monitoring in the interests of Brussels” and provoking the situation. She added that since the agreements reached in 2020, “there have been <...> Yerevan [с Баку] namely the Western community.”

Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan repeatedly accused Russia of failing to fulfill its obligations in Nagorno-Karabakh. In particular, in early September, he said that Russia was moving away from the South Caucasus, and Russian peacekeepers allegedly did not control the Lachin corridor. In the Kremlin didn’t agree with the words of the prime minister, emphasizing that the Russian Federation is “an integral part of this region” and then cannot leave it.

At the end of September, press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov emphasizedthat Moscow categorically disagrees with the attempt to place responsibility for the events in Karabakh on the Russian side and the peacekeepers, “who show real heroism in performing their functions.” At the same time, he noted that Armenia remains an ally and a state close to Russia.
