Zakharova responded to Romania’s demand to return the gold

In response to the demand to return gold exported to the Russian Empire in 1916–1917 to Romania, Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova recalled the gold reserves transferred during the Soviet era and debt forgiveness after the Great Patriotic War.

On March 14, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the return to Romania of part of the national treasure sent to Russia for safekeeping in 1916 and 1917, including 91.5 tons of gold. Zakharova noted that Romania uses anti-Russian platforms to try to impose phantom debts on Russia, trying to improve the economic situation against the backdrop of problems in the country.

She also mentioned that the Soviet government sent 1,436 tons of valuables to Bucharest in 1935 as a sign of goodwill. In 1949, Russia forgave the debt owed to Bucharest for the troubles and destruction caused by the Great Patriotic War, valuing it at $300 million in reparations, or about $4 billion today.

Calculating all Romanian debts to Russia and the Soviet Union, Zakharova claims that the total amount could reach 1365–1665 tons of gold, exceeding the value of the entire Romanian gold reserve sent to Russia in 1916–1917 by 20–25 times.
