Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich is not the first Western correspondent caught spying in Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
She noted that the Russian special services repeatedly caught such journalists red-handed, but did not make such facts public.
“How many times before Gershkovich we simply caught them on this kind of activity, we simply did not make it public. And they wanted, you know, to build normal relations (with the West) for many years and paid attention that it was impossible to do this, ”she said on the sidelines of SPIEF in an interview with RT.
WSJ Moscow bureau correspondent Evan Gershkovich was detained on March 30 in Yekaterinburg on suspicion of spying for the US government. He is charged with collecting information constituting a state secret. According to the FSB, Gershkovich collected information about the work of one of the Russian defense enterprises.
