Zakharova did not rule out that the EU will need a “nuclear Ukraine”

It is possible that the European Union will need a “nuclear Ukraine”. This opinion expressed Russian Foreign Ministry official representative Maria Zakharova on Sputnik radio.
“Can you imagine Ukraine with nuclear weapons? Who will manage what there? People cannot control each other or themselves. <...> But given the fact that people like [глава МИД ФРГ] Annalena Berbock are in power in the countries of the European Union, I do not rule out that in this theater of the absurd they will also need a nuclear Ukraine,” Zakharova said.
She recalled that earlier the EU countries did not respond to the statement of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky about a possible review of Ukraine’s renunciation of nuclear weapons.
On February 18, 2022, at the Munich Conference, Zelensky announced that he would initiate consultations within the framework of the Budapest Memorandum. “If they do not take place again or their results do not provide security guarantees for our country, Ukraine will have every right to believe that the Budapest Memorandum does not work, and all package decisions of 1994 will be called into question,” he said.
On February 22 of the same year, Russian President Vladimir Putin statedthat Moscow took into account Kyiv’s statement. Two days later, he announced the start of a Russian special operation in Ukraine. This decision was made, among other things, because of conversations in Kyiv about the possible acquisition of nuclear weapons and the expansion of NATO, Putin later explained.
