The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in response to the call of the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, to provide Ukraine with “all the military capabilities that it needs”, asked if they were talking about nuclear weapons.
“The head of the European Commission, Von der Leyen, called for giving Ukraine any weapon that it can use. Nuclear, right? — wrote She is in her Telegram channel.
January 17 on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos Ursula von der Leyen statedthat Kyiv should receive all the military equipment it can use, including modern systems. Thus, the head of the EC answered the question of journalists whether she, as a former German defense minister, supports the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv.
Von der Leyen expressed hope that progress on this issue would happen on January 20 at a meeting of the allies with representatives of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry at the Ramstein airbase.
The head of the EC also recalled that the European Union had previously approved a program of macro-financial assistance to Ukraine for 18 billion euros. January 16 between the EU and Ukraine was signed memorandum about it. Kyiv the next day received the first tranche of 3 billion euros, the EC reported.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized Western financial and military assistance to Ukraine. In particular, Zakharova warned more than once that pumping up Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia.
