Acting Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland thought that the situation in Niger could be resolved by analogy with Ukraine in 2014, but the rebels in the African republic are different from the Kyiv regime. This statement was made by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

“Victoria Nuland thought that with Niger you can do the same as with Ukraine: put in a plastic bag of buns and fool? Such a banana regime, as in Kyiv, is no longer to be found, ”- wrote Zakharov in his Telegram channel.

On August 7, Nuland flew to Niger, where she held “extremely frank and at times quite difficult” meetings with representatives of the rebels, transmitted CNN channel. The negotiations lasted about two hours, the American politician was not able to meet with the detained president, but talked to him by phone.

Following the talks, Nuland said that Washington offered the rebels “a few options to continue the conversation” and expressed her hope that they would support the US efforts.

On July 26, the Niger military announced the removal of President Mohamed Bazum and the closure of the borders. At the same time, a nationwide curfew was established and the activities of all institutions of the republic were suspended. The rebels allegedly explained their actions by the deterioration of security, economic and social problems.

The UN Security Council later called on the rebels to release the country’s democratically elected president. On August 2, the rebels announced the opening of air and land links with Algiers, Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali and Chad. On the evening of August 6, the country’s airspace was again closed because of the threat of a military invasion.

The Kremlin expressed concern about the situation in Niger. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow stands for the speedy restoration of the rule of law in the country and for “restraint on all sides so that this does not lead to human casualties.”
