Japan has embarked on the path of an unprecedented build-up of its own military power, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
“Official Tokyo has taken the path of an unprecedented buildup of its own military power, including the acquisition of strike potential. There is a frank refusal of the Kishida administration from the peaceful development of the country, which was persistently declared by previous generations of politicians, and a return to the rails of unbridled militarization,” quotes diplomat press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to Zakharova, this will inevitably provoke new security challenges and will lead to increased tension in the Asia-Pacific region (APR).
Japan earlier accepted a new national security strategy that includes a determination to have “counterstrike” capability to pre-empt enemy attacks. In addition, it decided to double military spending in order to gain a more offensive base and increase its resilience to protect against growing risks from China, North Korea and Russia.
Japan aims to double its defense spending to around 2% of its GDP, for a total of around 43 trillion yen ($320 billion) by 2027. The new spending target is in line with the NATO standard and will eventually increase Japan’s annual budget to around 10 trillion yen ($73 billion), which is the third largest in the world after the United States and China.
