Russia condemns Ukraine’s plans to actively use terrorist methods against Russian nuclear power plants, this could lead to a large-scale nuclear disaster in Europe, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Foreign Ministry calls the international community and the leadership of the IAEA and the UN to pay attention to the Ukrainian drone strike on the city of Kurchatov and “strongly condemn the irresponsible behavior of Kyiv,” Zakharova said in a comment.
A Ukrainian drone crashed and exploded on the night of July 14 in Kurchatov, where the Kursk nuclear power plant is located. The Foreign Ministry recalled that thanks to the work of the air defense forces guarding the station, critical facilities were not damaged, no one was injured.
“At the same time, the nuclear power plant was the likely target of the new Ukrainian provocation, which once again indicates that the Kiev regime has embarked on the path of using nuclear terrorism methods,” the statement says.
Zakharova stressed that this is not the first time Kyiv “threatens the security” of the Kursk nuclear power plant. So, in August last year, Ukrainian saboteurs blew up power lines.
Governor Roman Starovoit previously reported on his Telegram channel that critical facilities were not damaged after the UAV crashed. According to RIA Novosti, the drone fell a few kilometers from the Kursk nuclear power plant. Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that “the enemy does not leave attempts to strike,” and noted the effective operation of Russian air defense systems.
On July 9, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, commenting on the information about the attempts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to hit the Smolensk nuclear power plant, said that if this information is confirmed, Russia should consider the option of a retaliatory strike simultaneously on several Ukrainian nuclear power plants and on nuclear facilities in Eastern Europe.
