The ban on wearing the St. George ribbon is a monstrous decision by the Moldovan authorities. This statement was made by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, on the air of Channel One.
“This is a monstrous decision, monstrous. They still have the conscience to dump all this into the public space in the form of some kind of justification, ”she said (quote according to TASS).
According to Zakharova, this symbol cannot be “isolated and torn out” from the history of victory in the Great Patriotic War and World War II.
The day before, April 27, Prime Minister of Moldova Dorin Recean declaredthat in the republic they will be fined for wearing the St. George ribbon on Victory Day on May 9.
In the spring of 2022, the Moldovan parliament introduced fines for displaying the St. George ribbon, as well as the symbols Z and V. The decision was made in connection with the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. According to the law, the public display of the ribbon and the Z and V symbols is punishable by fines of 4,500 to 9,000 lei ($250 to $500) for individuals. The ban will not affect award bars and ribbons of orders.
In April of this year, the Constitutional Court of Moldova recognized the legality of establishing such a ban. The court decision notes that it is possible to punish for wearing Z and V ribbons and symbols if they are used to justify a military operation in Ukraine.
