Hunka was honored as a war hero. Rota later apologized “to every Holocaust survivor and World War II veteran.” Against honoring an SS veteran spoke office of the UN Secretary General. Minister of Education and Science of Poland Przemyslaw Czarnek offered consider the possibility of extraditing Hunka from Canada.
Russian Embassy in Ottawa stated, which will send a note to the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the honoring of the veteran of the SS Galicia division. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov named “sloppy” is such an attitude towards the memory of the Second World War. Deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation accepted a document in which they expressed outrage at Hunka’s invitation to parliament.
