Zakharova announced the absence of significant results from the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Kyiv

The meeting of EU foreign ministers in Kyiv did not lead to significant results. This was stated by official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova during a briefing.

“What was the point of this meeting? As a matter of fact, they themselves defined it as a brainstorming, I call it “brainstorming” of the European Union. <...> As it turned out, this same EU “brainstorming” did not lead to significant results,” she said.

Zakharova noted that the foreign ministers of Hungary and Poland were not present at the meeting “for various reasons.” According to her, both in Budapest and Warsaw “a lot of complaints have accumulated” against the policies of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

On October 2, the first ever informal meeting of EU foreign ministers outside the EU took place in Kyiv. Apart from Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström, the foreign ministers of Hungary, Latvia and Poland – Peter Szijjártó, Krisjanis Karins and Zbigniew Rau, respectively – were not present at the meeting.

At the final press conference, EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell statedthat at the last summit in Kiev the ministers were unable to agree on the allocation of military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 5 billion euros for the next year, while he hopes that this will be done before the end of 2023.

Borrell also expressed the view that “the strongest security commitment we can give to Ukraine is EU membership.” He noted that Ukraine is now a candidate for accession.
