Zakharova: after the events in Germany, let Berlin answer why it supported the Ukrainian coup

After suppressing the coup attempt in Germany, the country’s authorities must answer the question of why Berlin supported the coup in Ukraine, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

She recalled how Germany’s leading politicians acted.

Joschka Fischer, who served as Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister of Germany from 1998-2005, “supported the allegedly ‘peaceful change of power’ as a result of the ‘Orange Revolution’ in 2005.”

Guido Westerwelle, who was the head of the German Foreign Ministry in 2009-2013, “met on the Maidan with the leaders of the Ukrainian opposition in 2013.”

The current President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was in 2005-2009 and in 2013-2017 the head of the Foreign Ministry, “led” mediation negotiations “with the putschists and usurpers” during the Euromaidan.

Zakharova asks the question: “was this not a direct support for the very coup d’état that the German authorities suppressed so swiftly and harshly inside their country?”

She also asks: “Is the capture of the constitutional authorities, which include the parliament, the courts … the executive authorities, by ultra-right radicals, is it an attempted coup or not?”

Her third question is: “If so, why did at least three German foreign ministers explicitly and politically support this when it comes to Ukraine?”

If the answer is no, then “what kind of coup attempt in Germany are we talking about now?”

“This is a direct question that Berlin is obliged to answer,” Maria Zakharova stressed.

On December 7, the German Prosecutor General’s Office announced the suppression of an attempted coup in the country. Special services detained 25 out of more than 50 people suspected of plotting the coup. The special operation was carried out in Germany, Austria and Italy. It was reported that the terrorist organization that was preparing the coup included a representative of one of the German princely families, high-ranking military men, a politician, and special forces of the German Defense Ministry. The putschists created their own government and military wing, recruited supporters in law enforcement agencies.
