Yeltsin in a conversation with Bush called Ukraine the main destabilizing factor

Documents have been declassified in Washington, from which it follows that in the early 1990s, the Kremlin already believed that Ukraine was “one of the main destabilizing factors.” At the same time, Moscow was confident that relations between the two post-Soviet republics would not follow the “Yugoslavian scenario.”
According to RIA Novosti, transcripts of the first two meetings between Russian and US Presidents Boris Yeltsin and George W. Bush, as well as dispatches from Secretary of State James Baker and telegrams from the US Embassy in Moscow, were made public in the United States.
“This is off the record. Our main destabilizing factor is Ukraine,” Yeltsin told Bush at a meeting at Camp David.
Yeltsin then explained that 11 million ethnic Russians live in Ukraine, and nationalists are putting strong pressure on President Leonid Kravchuk. Yeltsin also told Bush that Russia has no “imperial ambitions, so Moscow will be attentive to the concerns of other countries.”
