The founder of the Yabloko party, Grigory Yavlinsky, said that the first and only president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, gave freedom to hundreds of millions of people in Russia. The responsibility for the use of “gifted freedom” lies with the Russians themselves, Mr. Yavlinsky believes.
“Gorbachev gave us freedom. He gave freedom to hundreds of millions of people in and around Russia, and also to half of Europe. How we in Russia took advantage of the freedom given to us, this great opportunity, is already our responsibility, ”he wrote in Telegram.
Grigory Yavlinsky believes that few leaders in history had such a decisive influence on their time as Mikhail Gorbachev, who “changed the world in six years in power.” According to him, having unlimited power, Mikhail Gorbachev was able to “preserve his dignity and remain a man”, and not steal anything from either the country or the people.
“Gorbachev did not leave Russia. He would have been received with enthusiasm in any country, but he remained in his homeland, where it was extremely difficult for him from mass misunderstanding and rejection, ”said Mr. Yavlinsky.
Mikhail Gorbachev died August 30 at the Central Clinical Hospital. He was 91 years old. He suffered from kidney disease for a long time. He will be buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery next to his wife. The date of the funeral is not called. Condolences on his death were expressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, UN Secretary General António Guterres and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
