Xi Jinping: China and the US have no right to turn their backs on each other

Competition between China and the United States should not become the prevailing trend in relations between the two countries – China and the United States do not have the right to “turn their backs on each other.” This was stated by Chinese President Xi Jinping at a meeting with US President Joe Biden.

Biden, in turn, said that the United States and China must make sure that their competition does not lead to conflict. This is exactly what the United States intends to do, and this is what, according to Biden, the entire world community expects from them.

Xi Jinping responded that he considers the bilateral relationship between the United States and China to be the “most important” in the whole world, and a possible conflict between the People’s Republic of China and the United States would entail “unbearable consequences” for both sides. The Chinese President explained that the world is big enough for both countries to prosper.

The meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping takes place as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit at Filoli Estate near San Francisco. Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov statedthat the Kremlin will monitor reports on the meeting of “the two largest economies in the world.”

The previous time the heads of state met was on November 14, 2022, on the sidelines of the G20 leaders’ summit in Indonesia. Then the negotiations lasted more than three hours. During last year’s meeting, Biden also warned China against conflict with the United States and noted that Washington will continue to actively compete with Beijing, but rivalry should not escalate into conflict.
