Washington and Cairo are close to concluding an agreement on the evacuation of people from the Gaza Strip to Egyptian territory. The Wall Street Journal writes about this, citing sources in the Egyptian government.
According to US and Israeli officials, there are at least 500 Americans and hundreds of citizens of other countries in Gaza, including members of non-governmental organizations, journalists and UN staff. Trilateral consultations between representatives of Israel, Egypt and the United States on the possibility of creating humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians have been ongoing in recent days. But official Cairo did not previously support such measures. Moreover, he ignored the demands of the Israeli army to evacuate the population from the northern regions of the enclave and called this a threat to the lives of more than a million Palestinian citizens.
At the same time, on Friday it became known that Egypt has strengthened security measures on the border with the Gaza Strip. Several thousand additional security officers were sent there.
At the same time, the Egyptian authorities announced their readiness to help organize the evacuation of Russians from the Gaza Strip. Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko said this in an interview with RT. At the same time, the diplomat drew attention to the fact that the Israeli authorities cannot yet guarantee the safe passage of people to the Rafah checkpoint. At the moment, no security corridor exists.
