The management of The Wall Street Journal posted a special statement on the website dedicated to the case of reporter Evan Gershkovich detained in Russia. It contains a demand to immediately release the journalist.
The publication pompously stated that “Evan’s case is an insult to the free press and should cause outrage among all free people.” They also stressed that no reporter should ever be detained for doing their job.
The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich was detained on March 30 in Yekaterinburg on suspicion of espionage. According to the FSB, the reporter collected information about one of the enterprises of the military-industrial complex, which constitutes a state secret.
A criminal case was initiated against Gershkovich under Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Espionage”). The Lefortovo Court of Moscow sent the American under arrest until May 29.
According to the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, what the employee of the American publication was doing in Yekaterinburg has nothing to do with journalism. At the same time, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov warned that the journalist was caught red-handed.
