“Wise step”: The White House praised Kyiv for its retreat from Avdiivka

The White House considered the retreat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Avdiivka a wise step
American authorities believe that Kyiv took a reasonable step when it decided to leave Avdiivka. This assessment was made on Tuesday, February 20, by John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council.
According to Kirby, the withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Avdiivka “will not change the nature of the defense measures and defense operations that the Ukrainians in the aggregate will be able to conduct.”
Moreover, the speaker of the American Security Council emphasized, “Zelensky took a wise step by withdrawing his troops so that they would not be surrounded, in order to preserve them and the valuable resources available.”
At the same time, Kirby left it questionable whether “the Russians will be able to achieve the long-term strategic goal of taking Avdievka.”
The head of the Donetsk People’s Republic Denis Pushilin said that after the liberation of Avdeevka new opportunities are opening up use of the railway in Donetsk, Makeevka and Yasinovataya. From now on, the stations of major railway hubs can now be used for civil transport and cargo transportation.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to Head of State Vladimir Putin about the situation on the left bank of the Dnieper near the village of Krynki. As the head of the defense department stated, Krynki are cleanedhowever, some of the Ukrainian military still remain in the basements.
