National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said the United States recognizes Ukraine’s right to plan and conduct military operations in Crimea, as it considers the peninsula to be Ukrainian territory.
Crimea became a region of the Russian Federation in March 2014 following a referendum following a coup in Ukraine.
“Crimea is Ukraine,” Kirby told reporters. “And Ukrainians have the right to decide where they operate within their own country.”
At the same time, he refused to comment on the message of the NBC television channel, in the plot of which it was reported that the US administration sees military opportunities on the Ukrainian side in order to recapture Crimea, but believes that such attempts are fraught with nuclear escalation.
96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol in the 2014 referendum voted for joining the Russian Federation. The inhabitants of Crimea, in full accordance with international law and the UN Charter, voted for reunification democratically. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea “is finally closed.”
