White House: US has no way to expel Russia from UN Security Council

At a press briefing for journalists, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the United States has no legal basis for excluding Russia from the UN Security Council. She answered a question about Russia’s forthcoming chairmanship of the Security Council in April and added that this is more of a ceremonial position, which is passed month by month alphabetically. The United States will itself chair the Security Council in August 2023.
“Unfortunately, Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council, and there are no real international legal ways to change this situation,” TASS quoted her as saying.
Jean-Pierre also urged Russia to behave professionally during the presidency and to continue its important work in the Security Council. She noted that the United States expects Russia to continue disinformation and divert attention from the situation in Ukraine. The White House official believes that a country that violates the UN Charter and invades the territory of its neighbor does not deserve a seat on the UN Security Council.
